Stories from the past

Mark had the idea of recording some conversations about our past, particularly recollections from childhood and schooldays. But we never seem to manage to make enough time, so Karin suggested I should set up a website where we could write about childhood memories. Since then Mark has recorded several hours, but we have continued with the website.

I built it originally with WordPress, Then in 2021 I learnt some Python and the Django web framework so I thought I would try to rework it with those tools. That was fine, and I was running it on a service that was free for small sites like this, but then that service announced they would start charging. As I looked for alternatives, it became clear that the site would become almost impossible for us to support. So we decided to change to a fully supported paid service, and we chose Squarespace, not because it is cheap (it’s not), but because it provides a password-protected site.

This basic level provides for two contributors only. If we decide later that everyone should be able to contribute, we just have to upgrade our level. That would also give us some more capabilities, particularly in customising the design.

We also have a link to an an interactive family tree, which is on an external site. It is built using Mac Family Tree, which I run mainly on my laptop, although I have it on the iPad as well. One of the ways it lets you publish the tree is by hosting a website, so that’s what we have here, but it's not optimised for phones.

Normally you wouldn’t publish a family tree on the web with entries for living people, but this one is behind the site login and has its own password, so I think it’s secure enough, and some of it is interesting.

No claims for accuracy are made once you go back more than a few hundred years, except for the branch that goes back to Edward III which is well documented. Many of the sources are in ancestry.com, and we can’t go back to those without paying their subscription. Back when we had one, I observed a disappointing amount of rubbish in there, but I tried to clean up as best as I could.
