Test Cricket
Around the time we moved to Carew there was an MCC tour (1954/55, Len Hutton’s side). They played SA Country at Mt Gambier and we were there for a day. Peter May, Alec Bedser, Frank Tyson and Godfrey Evans are some I remember. After that Australia played England in the Adelaide Test and I went to some of that with Uncle Bob and Auntie Bae. I got sort of lost there one day at lunch, when Bob and some other bloke went off for something (a beer, lunch?), leaving me down near the fence. As everyone seemed to be moving out, I decided that was the thing to do, so I fronted up to the man on the gate (eastern side of the ground, before any grandstands or Victor Richardson gates) for a pass out. No he said, you don’t want one of these, and handed me over to the police. I sat in their little tent until Uncle Bob et al came looking for me. Another day I went with Auntie Bae and we sat in the members, right next to the players race. I remember quite a bit from that day, both seeing the players close up and some snatches of play.
