Driving
I started steering the tractor and Land Rover pretty young. Dad used to feed oats to the sheep in summer/autumn from the four-wheeled trailer, and I was the driver – very slow pace so he could feed out the grain in a good solid line. I also used to drive the Land Rover along the track to the scrub block, over sand hills (three) and through a flat wet part near the block, when Dad was driving the sheep. Getting stuck was not unusual in either area. I also ran into a tree on one of the sand hills one time, bent the front mudguard which went in for repairs at Carew. Very worried boy! Dad had a mate Sam Pannach who came from the Barossa I think (may be wrong) who was a bit of a mechanic and used to help with vehicle repairs. I think they lived down the road past the Kongal Rocks towards Swedes Flat.
